A functional behavioral assessment (FBA) is a valuable tool in the hands of a behavior programmer. However, the FBA does little good unless it is paired with a solid behavior intervention plan. Too often, behavior intervention plans (BIP) are built without team planning and support. This presentation will isolate and address the major components of the FBA and BIP. Attendees will walk away with templates that are easy to use so everyone on the team knows exactly what to do with a plan that can be implemented with fidelity. Topics will include (a) defining the behavior, (b) how to identify an appropriate replacement behavior, (c) lesson planning for the replacement behavior, (d) prevention strategies focusing on curricular, environmental, and teacher modifications, (e) reinforcement systems, (f) planning for failure, (g) how to set up a systematic data collection system, and (h) plan evaluation. The presentation will address the reasons behind each of the focus areas and provide templates for participants to use back in their districts.

Everyone knows that schools encounter challenges on a daily basis, but in the midst of running from fire to fire to put them out, some leaders unintentionally approach all of those challenges in the same way instead of varying their leadership approach. This can result in leading from a place of management rather than leading your district through meaningful change. In this session, we will distinguish between technical and adaptive challenges while identifying leadership and facilitation strategies that can be used to shift school culture and positively promote change through shared leadership and collective ownership.
